Outlined by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, this strategy emphasises creating new market spaces instead of existing ones. When discussing the market universe, both Kim and Mauborgne focus on the creation of a new market space. In doing so, this creates an uncontested space, making competition concerns irrelevant.

The market is broken down into both Red Oceans and Blue Oceans. Red Oceans refers to the known market spaces. Within these spaces there are already existing boundaries. Boundaries can cause the market to become crowded, and significantly lower opportunities. The Blue Ocean theory on the other hand, focuses on creating your own space and setting your own rules.
